There are many ways to partition up a physical server in such a way as to create contained environments into which you can install self-contained / isolated applications. Typical use-cases might be for a general office server that might be serving up a backup system, a couple of web sites, a CMS system and maybe a shared file-server. As each of these may require a completely separate Operating System installation, historically they may have needed a separate server for each. (or alternatively a fairly powerful server with a plentiful supply of memory running a series of virtual machines). With containers, you could easily run this type of setup of a small ARM based server for £250.
LXC/LXD containerisation is an Open Source containerisation system. It comes with a comprehensive browser based User Interface and is designed to handle pooled thin-provisioning shared storage based on LVM2 or ZFS. When using ZFS it can also handle transparent encryption and compression for greater security and storage optimisation.
